The lush green of early summer and the soothing sound of a cascade in the Little Pigeon River at Greenbrier in the Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee provides a peaceful summer interlude.

At an early age growing up in the mountains of eastern Kentucky, I was fascinated with photography but was never able to explore its possibilities with the little instamatic camera that I had. It really wasn't until 1994 as I prepared to go overseas as a volunteer with a Christian educational team in Russia that I invested in my first film SLR camera just days before leaving. Having no formal photography training, I taught myself how to use it by trial and error (lots of it!).
